Recycled Tire - Employee Creations Week 3

Week 3: Carmen, recycled tire turned succulent planter.

For week 3, Carmen has decided to upcycle this old tire in a fun and colorful way!

Being a family owned business, we like to run the nursery like a big family. We thought a fun blog project would be to invite all our employees to make their own Succulent creations. We are asking one employee a week, starting alphabetically, to do so. At the end of each week we will “showcase” that employees design at the nursery, on the blog and on our Instagram.

Why a recycled tire? And, why make a watermelon?

It’s a neat way to recycle an old tire. This project also took me back to my childhood where I spent a lot of time at my grandmother’s house.

With a little paint this inside-out tire is ready for a whole new life.

How long did it take to make it and how many plants did you use?

It took me 3 hours to complete this project. I used about 35 plants.

How exactly did you make it?

First, I cut the design out and then I turned the tire inside out. After this was done, I spray painted the tire to look like a watermelon.

What are some of the plants you used and why?

I used Sempervivum, Sedum, soft succulents and a few of the Cactus. I wanted to show that all these succulents look good together. This is a fun project for the garden. You can even grow herbs and vegetables in it.

This colorful project has us wishing it was summer already!

What are your favorite succulents?

It’s hard to choose a favorite. They all have their unique color and shapes.

What are the most difficult succulents to work with?

The most difficult succulents to work with are the tender sedums and soft succulents. (Jellybeans, Burrito, & Ghost Plants)

Why or what do you love about working at MCG?

I love how well we work as a team. When I first told my boss about my idea for this project, she helped me make it come to life. My supervisor was also there to give me some tips. We all work together and help each other out here, there is no competition.
