DIY Succulent Fairy Garden
Week 12 - Vanessa
Vanessa has put together this lovely miniature garden scene. |
Being a family owned business, we like to run the nursery like a big family. We thought a fun blog project would be to invite all our employees to make their own Succulent creations. We are asking one employee a week, starting alphabetically, to do so. At the end of each week we will “showcase” that employees design at the nursery, on the blog and on our Instagram.
Why a Fairy Garden?
I really wanted to make a fairy garden, but turns out it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be.
You can use Sempervivums this way in real-life staircases too! |
How long did it take to make it and how many plants did you use?
It took me about an hour and a half and I used 7 plants and lots of tiny Sempervivum.
These little chicks are just the cutest. |
How exactly did you make it?
I have several broken terra cotta pots in my backyard and after looking at photos of the web of creations using these pots it all just came together.
Upright growing plants make for great miniature landscaping! |
What are some of the plants you used and why?
I used Sedum album for its draping effect, Senecio serpens ‘ Mini Blue’ for its tree like effect, Sedum ‘ Little Missy’ for its draping effect, Rosularia platyphylla as it looks like a walk- way, Sedum dasyphyllum also drapes nicely and I really love this plant, Kalanchoe marnieriana was used to add more “trees” around the mushroom house, and lastly I used Plectranthus tomaentosa (Vicks plant) because of its bright color. I also love its smell!
The square footage of this little home isn't great, but you can't beat the attached garden! |
What are your favorite Succulents?
I like Kalanchoe marnieriana, Plectranthus tomentosa (Vicks plant), Sedum dasyphyllum and many others.
What are the most difficult succulents to work with?
I would say the Echeveria spp. because they can be fragile.
Why or what do you love about working at MCG?
All of the succulents I get to take home!
