A selection of succulents that can grow in an open terrarium with proper care. Not all plants grow well in terrariums and succulents in non-draining containers have special care needs. Click Read More below to find out how to plant and care for a DIY succulent terrarium.
It is possible to grow succulents in glass terrariums, but it can be challenging. We do mot recommend it for people who are new to growing succulents. With that disclaimer, here's what you need to know to create a succulent terrarium that can stand the test of time.
Use only open terrariums with plenty of airflow, as the humidity in sealed terrariums is too high for succulents. Use a gritty, well-draining soil such as Bonsai Jack's Gritty Mix.
Terrariums usually do not have drainage holes and glass does not breathe, so be extra careful not to over-water. Water about 1/3 the volume of the soil and do not water again until the soil is completely dry and the plants start to feel flexible.
Keep the terrarium in an area with lots of airflow and indirect light. Try not to leave the terrarium in direct sun for more than a couple hours to protect your plants from overheating and burning.
Succulents are not heavy feeders and too much fertilizer can be detrimental, especially to young plants. Instead, re-pot the terrarium with fresh soil every 2-4 years to replenish the available nutrients.
