Highlights

'Dragon's Blood' (also known as Phedimus spurius 'Schorbuser Blut'): A colorful ground cover that starts the spring a bright green and by fall has deepened to wine red. It stands out for its bright red flowers and stems. This variety goes partially dormant in winter, losing its leaves to survive temperatures down to -30F. The plant sprouts back to life in spring, regrowing its leaves by May in most climates. It is not quite as fast growing as the other S. spurium varieties, making it a less aggressive companion plant in beds.

Sedum like well-drained, porous soil. Addition of grit or sharp sand will help porosity and drainage. Many varieties propagate by simply spreading leaves on the soil surface. To ensure division, remove top 2" of plant tips and strip lower leaves form bottom of stem. Plant in well-drained soil mix and water after 2-3 days. Do not over water! New plants should be well established after 5-6 weeks. Fertilize with a low-nitrogen fertilizer 1-2 times during growing season.

This is the price per order, but how many you'll need depends on a lot of different factors actually. If you wanted to fill the bed immediately, you'd need 830 of them.

However, these are Sedum and they can grow quite quickly, given a few conditions. How much light does this plot get? How much water? Does the soil retain water or not? Do you plan on fertilizing? If so, what strength fertilizer are you going to use?

All of these questions can influence how many plants you need.

Assuming good, full sun, weekly water in the summer, well draining soil and a weak fertilizer applied monthly, I would say a third of this number would be plenty, roughly 277… See full answer »

I don't see much of a difference, so I'm very curious. See more »

These two are quite similar and, to be fair, the differences between the two are minor. However, Sedum spurium 'Dragon's Blood' tends to keep a lot its lime green colors except under intense stress. Meanwhile, Sedum spurium 'Voodoo' becomes fully red with little provocation and develops a darker, maroon color.

I purchased a 4 pack of red succulents recently and I just noticed this one is loosing some lower leaves. What should I do? See more »
1 year ago  •  Staff Answer
Losing the lower leaves is a normal and healthy thing for Sedum to do. This allows the plant to focus on its newer leaves which are frequently getting more light anyway.

They can! The springs bulbs are able to poke up through the carpeting Sedum.

They partially are! We grow these in our display beds in zone 7b and they always have some of their foliage, even when they're covered in snow. However, they do shed a lot of their older leaves during the winter.

How much does the Dragon's Blood Sedum spread and how quickly? Trying to determine how many plants I need. See more »
1 year ago  •  Staff Answer
Sedum spurium 'Dragon's Blood' can spread up to 18" wide. It does so rather quickly, but how quickly is going to depend on a lot of variables like soil quality, light, watering schedual, etc. Roughly speaking, Sedum can spread an inch a month during the growing season if well cared for.

You're going to want the succulent types in this Frost Hardy Ground Cover category. All these types of Sedum, Delosperma, Rosularia, and more are super easy spreaders that thrive with cold winters and hot, dry summers. Use the "Grow Zone (Hardiness)" filter on the left of that category page to see only types that are hardy in your climate. To check what grow zone you're in, enter your zip code into this USDA Hardiness Tool.

Shop Succulent Soil Here

Succulents need grittier soil than other plants because they are adapted to dry conditions and store water in their leaves. Regular potting soil mixes stay damp for long periods of time, which can cause rot in succulents. Instead, use a sandy, well-draining soil so you can water thoroughly without leaving your succulent in standing water.
