Hardy Succulent Trays are a great way to replenish a cold clim...

Climate: Zone 5 - 10. Protect from heavy rain (what's my zone?)
Where to Grow: Hardy succulents thrive outdoors in full sun with afternoon shade. Good for both containers and in-ground. Long-term indoor growing possible in areas with 10+ hours of direct sun, but plants may fade and stretch (learn more)
Acclimation: Allow about two weeks to gradually transition from bright shade to partial sun after delivery
Transplanting: We recommend transplanting within 1-2 weeks. If removed from carrier tray, plants can stay in original pots for several weeks with proper care
Soil: Use gritty, well-draining soil to promote root growth and prevent rot, e.g. a cactus or succulent potting mix from your local garden center
Watering: Water deeply and only when the soil is completely dry. Actual frequency varies by location, container, soil, and season
Containers: Use any kind of container, but drainage holes are recommended (learn more)
Propagation: Propagate Sempervivum by removing offsets (chicks) and transplanting. Stemmed Sedum will re-root from stem cuttings.
Color: Hardy succulents can change colors several times throughout the year; peak color is usually spring and/or fall
Blooms: Depending on variety, Sempervivum usually bloom every 2-5 years. Bloom stalk is 6"-12" with multiple pink flowers. Once a mother hen blooms, it dies, but its chicks will carry on for future years. Sedum can bloom year after year, often in summer.

Yes! All of these varieties like to be outdoors year-round and can tolerate temperatures down to at least -20F (Zone 5). Aim to plant them in mild weather spring through fall, after the last frost of spring and at least one month before the first expected frost of fall. What type of pot do the succulents ship in?

Each of the succulents in this tray comes fully rooted in its own 2" square, plastic grow pot with drainage holes. It's always good plant hygiene to replant into a new pot with well-draining soil (or in the ground if they're hardy in your Grow Zone), but your succulents can stay in the grow pots they arrive in for up to about a month after delivery if necessary.

Are these hardy succulents deer resistant?

Yes, frost hardy succulents are deer resistant. We've heard from gardeners in areas with lots of deer that even if a deer takes an exploratory bite out of newly planted Sempervivum (Hens & Chicks), they do not come back for more like they do with other landscaping plants. So Sempervivum must not taste great to deer.

For spreading succulents in a humid climate, I would suggest Portulacaria afra, Crassula muscosa Watch Chain, Sedum 'Spiral Staircase', and Sedum 'Tokyo Sun' (click the names for links).
