Highlights
Mini Desert Rose (Trichodiadema densum) (Schwantes): A distinctive plant with an eye-catching look. It is easily confused for a cactus because its leaves are topped with gentle, white bristles. It is, however, an ice plant and has characteristically glittery, textured foliage. The plant stays under about 4.0" in height but spreads outward as a dense mat. This plant is small but fully rooted in a 3.5" pot.
Mature plants grow a wide caudex. When planted high in the soil with some exposed root, it makes an impressive bonsai plant. This South African species is a showy, winter bloomer, producing large, magenta flowers that tend to open in the morning and close by afternoon.
Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need bright sunlight, good drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.
