Highlights
Purple Spiderwort or Purple Heart (Tradescantia pallida 'Purpurea'): A versatile, easy to grow plant with vibrant, purple leaves. Its leaves are lance-shaped with fine cilia and can reach 5.0" long. The stems grow up to 18.0" long, making it a fantastic trailing plant or creeping ground cover. Bright sunlight is necessary to maintain the intense purple coloration that contrasts well with green plants in containers. It is hardy to about 10F (Zone 8), dying back above-ground and re-sprouting each spring, but it also grows well indoors. This variety produces sweet, simple blooms of three pale purple petals.
Please Note: The juices in the stems can mildly irritate skin; keep out of reach of children and animals.
Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. This variety needs bright sunlight, good drainage, and more regular water than most succulents. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.
This variety is easy to re-root from stem cuttings. Look to our Succulent Cuttings Guide for tips on succulent propagation.
