Climate: Zone 5+ (-20F). Protect from heavy rain (what's my zone?)
Where to Grow: Sempervivum thrive outdoors in full sun with afternoon shade. Good for both containers and in-ground. Long-term indoor growing possible in areas with many hours of direct sun, but greening and stretching is likely
Acclimation: Allow about 2 weeks to gradually transition from bright shade to partial sun after delivery
Transplanting: We recommend transplanting within 1-2 weeks. If necessary, plants can stay in original pots for several weeks with proper care
Soil: Use gritty, well-draining soil to promote root growth and minimize rot, e.g. a cactus or succulent potting mix from your local garden center
Watering: Water deeply and only when the soil is completely dry. Actual frequency varies by location, container, soil, and season (learn more)

Propagation: Propagate Sempervivum by removing offsets (chicks) and transplanting

What type of pot do the succulents ship in?

Each of the succulents in this tray comes fully rooted in its own 2" square, plastic grow pot with drainage holes. It's always good plant hygiene to replant into a new pot with well-draining soil (or in the ground if they're hardy in your Grow Zone), but your succulents can stay in the grow pots they arrive in for up to about a month after delivery if necessary.

Sempervivum are hens & chicks, so if the deer and rabbits chew on those, they'll chew on these. However, deer and rabbits don't like the taste of hens & chicks so established plants tend to not get hit. You could also apply cayenne pepper to the leaves to further discourage those two pests.

Are these hardy succulents deer resistant?

Yes, frost hardy succulents are deer resistant. We've heard from gardeners in areas with lots of deer that even if a deer takes an exploratory bite out of newly planted Sempervivum (Hens & Chicks), they do not come back for more like they do with other landscaping plants. So Sempervivum must not taste great to deer.
