Highlights

Sempervivum heuffelii 'Irene': A burgundy red rosette with a light, yellow green heart. It turns a dark purple in winter and really stands out with of its highlighted, white leaf margins.

S. heuffelii are super frost hardy and drought tolerant. They thrive outdoors year-round and hold vibrant colors through the seasons. To produce vegetative offsets, a mother plant will divide and develop into a neat cluster of new rosettes. These rosettes can be cut apart and transplanted (How to Propagate Heuffelii) or left to cluster. After several years, a rosette will bloom and die but its offsets will live on.

Plant S. heuffelii outdoors in sunny locations with great drainage. Water in the spring through summer growing season if the soil is completely dry and protect from heavy rains and standing water, especially in winter. These hardy plants thrive through winter well under an insulating blanket of snow.

Mostly, no. However, every year these plants will lose some of their lowest leaves to make room for new growth. These dry, dead leaves do harden and can be pretty prickly. Not enough to draw blood but enough to let you know they're there.

They can be grown in pots.

It'll come to you in a 2" pot already so a 3.5" or 4" pot should be perfect for repotting into.

Live? Yes, most likely without reaching its full color potential. Thrive? Probably not.

Sempervivum love the outdoors. They like getting cold and being rooted in tiny cracks in rock with terrible soil. They like drought and dry air and conditions that other plants would find quite inhospitable. However, as a houseplant they tend to grow in a lethargic manner and are more susceptible to rot.

I lve in an area where we have deer and elk. How do I protect succulents or is there one that they don't like to eat? See more »
1 year ago  •  Staff Answer
Sempervivum are deer resistant because they taste terrible. The same goes for Sedum. Other plants, like Agave and Opuntia cactus, are deer resistant because of their spines.

You will get one plant for the displayed price, unless you change the quantity number on the store page listing for the plant.

This plant will be roughly 2" across and 1-1.5" tall.

It is possible that it will have chicks but this is not guaranteed.

Yes! Looks like you're in hardiness zone 6a, meaning that your minimum temperature is about -10F. Sempervivum heuffelii are frost hardy (and quite happy) all the way down to -30F.

Yes you can. These plants are very resistant to frost, even down to temperatures of -30°F.

A small pot may reduce its hardiness a tiny amount but, for most of the US, this is negligible.

I am working on making a rock landscaped area- I was hoping to start the process of growing some plants indoor- then transferring them outside when the landscape project is completed- any tips or best practice to do so- or is this advisable? thanks! See more »
8 months ago  •  Staff Answer
You could keep them indoors in a very sunny south-facing window and then transfer them outdoors later. But the plants will start to fade indoors and then be at risk of permanent damage if they are moved into full sun and heat too quickly. You'd have better luck just keeping hardy succulents outdoors in partial sun until you're ready to transplant them.

That depends on what you mean by "a little above the soil".

You want to make sure the root ball is completely covered by soil. If the lowermost leaves of the rosette get some dirt on them, it's not the end of the world. As long as you don't over water, they should be fine.
