Highlights
Sedum 'Vera Jameson' (now Hylotelephium): A mid-sized landscaping plant that brings dark red to purple tones to the garden. It grows sprawling purple stems about 10.0" long. The grey-green foliage is relatively small and blushes deep purple in fall. It blooms in mid to late summer with purple buds that open to reveal dark pink flowers. This cultivar appeared in England in the 1970s in the garden of Vera Jameson. It is likely a hybrid of H. telephium 'Atropurpureum' x H. 'Ruby Glow'. It survives extra cold winters by dying back aboveground and resprouting in spring. Spring pruning can encourage full, dense growth.
Hardy Sedum are easy, frost-hardy plants that thrive outdoors with full sun and great drainage. Plant in raised beds or containers with drainage holes and mix 50% coarse sand, pumice, or perlite into the soil to prevent rot. Regular water will help young plants establish roots and spread quickly, but mature Sedum can tolerate several months of drought. If you choose to propagate by hand, cut off the top 2.0"+ of stem and transplant it to re-root.
