Highlights
Sedum lineare f. variegatum - Carpet Sedum, Needle Stonecrop (Thunberg): Trailing Sedum with long stems up to 6.0" and lance-shaped leaves up to 1.0" long. This is the variegated form of the species, which sports pink stems and green leaves outlined in white. The species is native to rocky habitats in Japan and China where it can thrive even in poor, shallow soils and full sun. It can bloom with yellow flowers in midsummer and spreads nicely without overtaking neighboring plants. It makes an excellent choice for hanging baskets but can only tolerate temperatures down to 0F.
Hardy Sedum are easy, frost-hardy plants that thrive outdoors with full sun and great drainage. Plant in raised beds or containers with drainage holes and mix 50% coarse sand, pumice, or perlite into the soil to prevent rot. Regular water will help young plants establish roots and spread quickly, but mature Sedum can tolerate several months of drought. If you choose to propagate by hand, cut off the top 2.0"+ of stem and transplant it to re-root.
