Highlights

Vicks Plant (Plectranthus tomentosa) (also known as Succulent Coleus): A member of the mint family and has somewhat thin (but still succulent!) leaves. It's known for the minty, camphor fragrance of its leaves.

"Tomentose" refers to the fuzzy, velvety coating that covers the whole plant. The undersides of the leaves are lined with raised veins and the edges are scalloped. It also produces large quantities of showy, lavender blooms.

Vicks Plant is a soft succulent and needs protection from frost and heavy rains. Make sure it has well-draining pots and soil, lots of bright sun, and deep water (when the soil is dry). It re-roots readily from stem cuttings (more info).

plectranthus tomentosa succulant is this plant edible? See more »

It is, and there's some evidence of medicinal activity. However, we don't recommend eating it as we do use pesticides on our succulents.

It can be roughly 24 inches in height and can spread about 30 inches horizontally at maturity.

When they come in the mail, however, they're in 2 inch pots so these plants start between 2-4 inches tall and roughly 2 inches wide.

Plectranthus has naturalized around the world, but this species is native to many countries in Africa (including the DRC, Angolia, Chad, South Africa, and Somalia) as well as Yemen and Sri Lanka.

To our knowledge, Plectranthus tomentosa has never borne the common name lemon oregano. However, these types of medicinal plants typically have many common names. It certainly wouldn't be surprising if lemon oregano was one such name.

These plants are fairly similar so it's easier to look at them side by side to see the differences for yourself. As such, I grabbed these two specimens from the greenhouses and snapped a photo of them. Plectranthus amboinicus is on the left, while P. tomentosa is on the right.

As you can see, P. amboinicus has more narrow leaves that are much more serrated than P. tomentosa. Plectranthus amboinicus leaves also tend to get larger than P. tomentosa's. Unfortunately, as you probably guessed from our product photos, these plants are variable in their appearance.
Their scents are only marginally different with both smelling strongly of camphor. It's also worth noting that Plectranthus is a rather chaotic genus that is not fully settled in the minds of many taxonomists.

Vick's plant, as well as many other Plectranthus plants, are easy to root via cuttings. If you can't move the pots inside, the best course of action is to take cuttings and root them in smaller pots in your house. Click the link below to learn about succulent cuttings.

From there it's pretty straight forward. Just grow them in a sunny window.

My vicks plant has always been dark green, but is now light green with new growth dark green. Is this normal or is my plant trying to die on me? This is my favorite plant, so if I need to do something to save it, please help...I'm not a green thumb, just a unexperienced plant lover. See more »

Unfortunately, there are a few reasons for a lighter color change in plants.

1) Watering issues. Both over and under watering can lighten the colors, but a simple test can distinguish between the two. If the lighter colored leaves are extra squishy and turn to wet mush easily, the issue is over watering. If they feel like the other leaves (and especially if they feel more leathery) then the issue could be under watering.

2) Too little light. This tends to be the most common reason for a lightening of the colors, however, because the new growth is the normal dark green, it's unlikely in this case. This plant does like a lot of light so, if it's not in a south facing window, it can only help to give it more light.

3) Nutrient issue. If you've had the plant for a while, it's possible that it could use some fertilizer. Normally, succulents don't need fertilizer… See full answer »

I need to know what to do to save my plant. See more »

Unfortunately, browning stems and yellowing leaves are textbook symptoms of rot and it's unlikely that your plant can be saved at this point. However, if there's green above the brown part of the stem, try cutting it there. Make sure there's no brown or yellow on the resulting cutting. Then root this cutting using the instructions below.

“I guess maybe the plants are fine (we will see) but they weren’t packaged well and got beat to death in shipping. Most of the shipping plants were covered in dirt but the roots weren’t. This one had several broken leaves and stems”
