Highlights
Pinguicula 'Weser': A hybrid butterwort with rosy pink leaves. Its broad, thin leaves are sticky to the touch and covered in tiny hairs. Look for large hot pink flowers in the spring and summer months. This plant ships bare root, without a pot, as a specimen of 1" - 2" in diameter.
Pinguicula, or butterworts, are carnivorous, semi-succulent plants. Their broad leaves are sticky and sweet smelling to gnats and other small, flying insects. These insects land on, and stick to, the leaves where glands rapidly secrete digestive fluids. This fluid is then reabsorbed by the plant after the prey item is digested.
Pinguicula need partial sun and lots of water. As bog plants, the soil should constantly be moist. They prefer shallow but wide pots as they don't root deeply at all. However, they love to offset and will fill the space available to them given time. If given too much light, or allowed to get too dry, butterworts go dormant, replacing their thin, broad leaves with thick, succulent leaves. In this state, they don't eat insects and can tolerate slightly drier conditions. Decrease the amount of light they're receiving and give them more water to break this dormancy.
