Highlights
Elephant's Trunk (Pachypodium namaquanum) (Welwitsch): A stemmed succulent that grows a tall trunk covered with long spines. The stems can branch and are topped with wavy, green leaves. It grows near the border between Namibia and South Africa, surviving in extremely arid conditions on barren ridge lines. In the wild it can grow to 8.0' tall and leans toward the sun. This is a challenging species to grow and it is accustomed to very dry conditions with only minimal winter rainfall. It loses leaves during its winter dormancy and re-sprouts them each spring.
Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need bright sunlight, good drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.
