Highlights
Madagascar Palm (Pachypodium lamerei): Stem succulent (not a palm) with a thorny, shiny silver trunk and long, thin leaves. Though it grows into a full tree in its native Madagascar, this slow grower will stay smaller indoors, reaching about 4.0' after years of growth. This plant is fully rooted in a 3.5" pot.
It is a very forgiving plant, tolerating a wide range of temperature and light conditions, which makes it a choice houseplant. This species stores water in its trunk and with its thin leaves it can require a bit more frequent watering than other succulents. It goes dormant and loses leaves in winter, during which time it should be kept dry. Its leaves re-sprout each spring.
PLEASE NOTE: In addition to being coated in sharp spines, this plant contains a toxic, latex sap and should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors. They need ample sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.
