Highlights

Dunce Cap (Orostachys finbriata): A unique variety of frost hardy rosettes. This species undergoes a radical transformation through the seasons. In summer it grows lots of short, golden leaves that stand upright in tight clusters. As days shorten and nights get colder, it shifts to its winter form that resembles a green sunflower. Each rosette's innermost leaves close in tightly while the outermost leaves stretch out long. An excellent, hard-to-find species for rock gardening.

Orostachys are easy, resilient plants that thrive outdoors with full sun and great drainage. Plant in raised beds or containers with drainage holes and mix 50% coarse sand, pumice, or perlite into the soil to prevent rot. Regular water will help young plants establish roots and spread quickly, but mature Orostachys can tolerate several months of drought. If you choose to propagate by hand, cut off a rosette and transplant it to re-root.
