Highlights
Opuntia polycantha var. erinacea 'Snow Fuzzy': A fuzzy, flattened, shrub cactus where each hair looks like fine frost. Although they begin spineless, or nearly so, they quickly get armed with long spines and glochids. However, under these, the fuzz remains, making this an attractive plant for dry gardens. Flowers are mostly lemon yellow but can emerge bubble gum pink or peach as well.
CAUTION: Opuntia species have fine, barbed bristles called glochids. Glochids easily detach and can become loose in the box during shipping. They will pierce skin and leather gloves, so use tongs when handling and see our Opuntia Care Guide for more tips.
This cactus variety will not survive extended, hard frosts, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
