Highlights
Neobuxbaumea polylopha cristata is a rare, crested form of the columnar cactus Neobuxbaumea polylopha, distinguished by its undulating, fan-like growth. Instead of growing as a single upright column, this cristate variant forms intricate, contorted ridges that resemble coral or brain-like structures. The stems are typically glaucous green to bluish in color and lined with rows of small areoles bearing short, pale spines. Due to its irregular growth, the plant remains compact, making it a sought-after specimen for collectors and specialty growers. It is commonly grafted onto hardy rootstock for stability and enhanced growth, and thrives in USDA zones 9b–11.
Cultivation of N. polylopha cristata requires well-draining soil, full to partial sun exposure, and minimal watering—making it well suited for arid and indoor environments. The plant prefers temperatures between 65–85°F and should be protected from frost. Its unique form and sculptural appearance make it ideal for container gardening, display collections, and decorative xeriscapes. Propagation is typically achieved via crest cuttings or grafting, as the cristate trait does not reliably pass through seed. With proper care, this crested cactus becomes a long-lived, visually striking centerpiece in any cactus or succulent collection.
This cactus variety will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
