Highlights
Melocactus azureus (Buining & Brederoo): A stunning globose species with a frosty blue coloration and 9-10 sharp ribs lined with spines. It is a member of the "Turk's Cap" genus, and will grow a cephalium, or dome of wool and red bristles, atop its stem. The cephalium produces vibrant, carmine to fuschia tubular flowers that contrast well with the blue of the stem. Its native habitat is in Brazil and at maturity this solitary cactus can reach about 7.0" tall and 5.5" wide. This plant is fully rooted in a 3.5" round, plastic pot.
This variety of cactus will not survive a frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
