Mangave 'Man of Steel' PP29196: A neat plant of long, slender leaves that shade from silver to purple. The leaves are outlines with cinnamon orange teeth, but the leaves are fairly flexible and easy to handle. A natural coating of epicuticular wax protects the plant in bright sun and gives it a soft, silvery appearance. Increased sun exposure can bring out the purple tones and a smattering of small, purple dots. At maturity, it reaches about 11.0" tall and 21.0" wide. This cultivar is a hybrid of Agave striata x Mangave 'Bloodspot'.
Mangave are a relatively new phenomenon: a cross between Manfreda and Agave. These rare cultivars are expertly hybridized by Hans Hansen of Walters Gardens to combine the best of both parents. Though the have a similar form to a typical Agave, they are marked with spots and flush brilliant purple and red tones when grown in bright sun. Additionally, they grow about twice as fast as Agave and are far less spiny to the touch.
This variety will tolerate a light frost, but it can also overwinter indoors on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They thrive outdoors in partial to full sun with good drainage, i.e. gritty soil and containers with drainage holes.
