Highlights
Mammillaria longimamma (de Candolle): A wild-looking cactus with long, finger-like tubercles. It grows a small, green, globose stem and has long, flexible tubercles extending out in all directions. Each tubercle has 10-13 long, bright white spines. M. longimamma blooms profusely with large, yellow funnelform flowers in summer. This species is native to Mexico and can reach 6.0" in height and diameter at maturity. It tends to be a solitary grower, but some specimens branch from the base of the stem.
This cactus variety will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
