Highlights
Wax Flower Plant (Hoya carnosa) (R. Brown): A phenomenal house plant that's easy to grow and produces one-of-a-kind blooms. It is a non-toxic, trailing plant with long stems and semi-succulent leaves. It is a resilient (if slow) indoor grower that appreciates great drainage and infrequent water. The Wax Plant actually thrives when kept slightly rootbound in a small pot, and should not be transplanted more than once every few years. After several years, it can start blooming each summer with globes of fragrant white flowers that almost look fake. Eventually, the stems can reach 20 feet long and even climb up a trellis.
Wax plants will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need ample sunlight, good drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.
