does this mix survive winter outdoors? If not what is the best practice to preserve them? 🙏 See more »
3 years ago  •  Staff Answer
Yes! All of these varieties like to be outdoors year-round and can tolerate temperatures down to at least -20F (Zone 5). Aim to plant them in mild weather spring through fall, after the last frost of spring and at least one month before the first expected frost of fall. You can find info on caring for hardy, outdoor succulents through winter here.

You're going to want the succulent types in this Frost Hardy Ground Cover category. All these types of Sedum, Delosperma, Rosularia, and more are super easy spreaders that thrive with cold winters and hot, dry summers. Use the "Grow Zone (Hardiness)" filter on the left of that category page to see only types that are hardy in your climate. To check what grow zone you're in, enter your zip code into this USDA Hardiness Tool.

You can also browse all of our Bulk Trays of Frost Hardy Succulents here. Sedum Trays tend to be available in the spring.

Not necessarily. We make all of our sets and trays each week based on the types of succulents that are in peak season. The photos are sample only, but you will get a range of varieties that all fit the theme of the set or tray.

Each of the succulents in this tray comes fully rooted in its own 2" square, plastic grow pot with drainage holes. It's always good plant hygiene to replant into a new pot with well-draining soil (or in the ground if they're hardy in your Grow Zone), but your succulents can stay in the grow pots they arrive in for up to about a month after delivery if necessary.

To pick the exact, individual plants you want, you'll want to shop here in our main catalog. Unfortunately, we cannot take specific requests in trays or sets, because we make them in bulk each week base on the varieties that are in peak season. But you'll always get a good mix of succulent types that match the theme of the tray or set.

I have 3 planters outside in North Texas. I had some beautiful flowers, but as soon as it got hot, they just dried out too fast. I'd like to plant something in them that can withstand the Texas heat and dry conditions. Would these be a good choice? See more »
3 years ago  •  Staff Answer
Yes, I believe these would be a good choice.

This set includes Sempervivum (Hens & Chicks) which can take a lot of direct sun, but not sun + heat + drought. I'd recommend watering them before particularly hot days or keeping them in a spot that gets morning sun and afternoon shade.

You're also very likely to end up with some hardy Sedum in this set. These Sedum can handle hot, direct sun even better than Sempervivum.

In any case, yes. I do believe these would do well in Texas, despite the scorching heat and drought. They'll also be able to stay outside all winter!

There are lots of frost hardy succulents that can tolerate zone 5 winters without being mulched over, including all the varieties in this Hardy Sampler Set. The link below shows all the succulents we carry that can thrive through zone 5 and colder winters. Just plant them in well-draining soil and withhold water when the temperature starts getting close to freezing at night. They even do well with snow piled on them through winter.

That's going to be a matter of personal preference, but it's a good idea to leave 1" of space between them.

These animals don't like the taste of succulents, however, they may nibble or uproot them when they're first planted. If animals are a persistent problem for you, spiny, frost hardy Agave and cacti could be your best choice.

“Great ”
Beautiful succulents!
March 11, 2025 by Christine M. (Arizona, United States)
“The succulents are very healthy. In the mailing process, the box was turned sideways therefore soil came out of the pots. So somewhat of a mess to clean up and put soil back into the pots with the plants. Evidently the post office doesn’t read the outside of the box that says “the side up”. But the plants are very healthy and I planted them successfully.”
