Highlights
Gymnocalycium taningaense (previously var. lukasikii) (Piltz): A short cactus from Argentina. It has a dark, green to purple stem with low tubercles. The dark stem contrasts well with the pale, pectinate spines that sprout from each areole. When blooming, the plant is dwarfed by its large, white to yellow flower. This is a slow-growing species that stays under 1.0" tall and 2.5" wide, but it can develop into a cluster of offsets with time. This plant is small, but fully-rooted in a 3.25" pot.
This cactus variety will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
