Highlights

Graptosedum 'Alpenglow' (aka 'Bronze' or 'Vera Higgins'): Brilliant pink leaves, shading from light rose to deep coral. The stems can grow long and start to bend and trail, with leaves growing on the full length of the stems. It can also be kept more compact with regular pruning (How to Fix Overgrown Succulents). It is a strong grower that can eventually form thick clusters in a range of sunset tones. This cultivar is likely a hybrid of Graptopetalum paraguayense x Sedum stahlii.

Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need bright sunlight, good drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.

This variety is easy to re-root from stem cuttings and mature leaves.Look to our Succulent Cuttings Guide for tips on succulent propagation.

Hello there!

'Alpenglow' comes in a 2 inch pot and there's just one plant per order. Commonly, however, there's two or three stems that make up that one plant and these can easily be divided into separate plants. I hope this helps!

My plant is growing so fast the stem cannot support it’s leaves. The plant is falling down and I don’t know what to do. I really want my Graptosedum alpenglow to thrive, but at this point the stem is going to collapse from the weight of the leaves. What should I do? See more »

It's possible that your plant needs more light. When succulents feel like they aren't getting enough light, they grow their stems rapidly upward to try to get above whatever is shading them. They'll keep it up until they either succeed or fall over. Unfortunately, more light will only prevent further stretching. It won't cause the old stems to thicken. You'll have to root a cutting and start over if this is the issue. You can read all about stretching at the link below!

If the issue isn't a lack of light, it is important to note that Graptosedum 'Alpenglow' does have stems that can hang and trail. Some of the lankiness may be natural.

Graptosedum tends to slow down its growth in the summer. However, it only ever goes partially dormant, if it goes dormant at all.

Fortunately, nothing changes as far as care is concerned. If you wait to water until you see signs of thirst (i.e. wrinkly, flaccid leaves), then the times between when you water don't matter.

As long as the plant is properly acclimated, yes. Be sure to introduce it to full sun slowly, exposing it to more and more light everyday until it's ready to take full sun.

Graptosedum plants don't experience a hard dormancy phase but they will slow down their growth in the winter.

Shop Succulent Soil Here

Succulents need grittier soil than other plants because they are adapted to dry conditions and store water in their leaves. Regular potting soil mixes stay damp for long periods of time, which can cause rot in succulents. Instead, use a sandy, well-draining soil so you can water thoroughly without leaving your succulent in standing water.

Our plants can be transplanted immediately upon arrival.
If you want to wait to transplant, they can remain in their original containers for up to a month. If the pots came in a plastic carrier tray, remove the pots from the carrier tray prior to the first watering.

Keep the plants indoors near a sunny window or outdoors under a roof (only if outdoor temperatures stay above your succulent's minimum hardiness temperature). Water only after the soil is fully dry by drenching from above with a faucet, hose, or watering can. Gently shake excess water from the leaves and allow containers to drain completely.

Fertilizing is not necessary, but it is a good option for succulent growers who want to encourage faster, larger growth. It can be used on mature plants with established roots. Only fertilize in the growing season (spring and summer for most varieties) to avoid weakening or burning dormant plants. Use a light touch and make 2-3 applications of low-Nitrogen, diluted fertilizer each year (N-P-K ratio around 5-10-10). You can find specially-formulated cactus / succulent fertilizers in most garden centers or go organic with compost tea or bone meal.

Example: Miracle-Gro Quick Start, diluted to half strength

Succulents need deep, infrequent watering, especially during their growing season and when they are young and establishing roots. Only water after the soil is completely dry and the plant feels less firm. Err on the side of underwatering. Watering too frequently is the most common way to kill succulents.

HOW TO WATER SUCCULENTS

  • Drench from above using a faucet, hose, or watering can
  • Do not mist with a spray bottle (the only exception is for Air Plants)
  • Water until it drains from the container's drainage hole. If your container does not have a drainage hole (not recommended), use about 1/3 the volume of the container…

“The Alpenglow are my favorite out of the 9 plants in my order! They remind me of little chirping birds in a nest. I ordered two 2 inch and I think there ended up being 13 individual plants packed in there. They’re so cute with their tiny little upright leaves. The color is gorgeous too! A light green stem with beautiful maroon leaves and rosettes.”
