Highlights
Gasteria acinacifolia (Haworth): The largest species of Gasteria, clocking up to 2.0' in diameter at maturity. These young plants are currently much smaller and are slow growers with long lifespans. The long, tongue-shaped leaves are rough with raised, white tubercles when they are young, but the foliage smooths out with time. They also start their lives distichous (leaves in one plane, like a fan) before eventually spiraling out into a loose rosette. Its inflorescence is also giant, with a bloom stalk reaching up to 3.0' tall.
Gasteria have low light and water requirements. They are one of the best types of succulents to grow indoors because they can tolerate low light conditions and still maintain their form and colors. Plant Gasteria in deep pots with drainage holes as they grow deep roots and will not tolerate standing water. Use a gritty, well-draining soil and water deeply, but only when the soil is fully dry. Protect from frost.
