Highlights
Baseball Plant (Euphorbia obesa) (Hooker): A small, symmetrical plant that stays nearly perfectly round. The stem has (usually 8) sides divided by small tubercles that resemble the stitching on a baseball. It has variable coloration with bands of blue-green, copper, silver, or purple. They need particularly gritty soil and should be kept dry during their winter dormancy. Each plant is either male or female and produces tiny, yellow flowers atop its stem. Over time, they elongate and can reach 12.0" tall and 4.0" wide. This species is endangered in its native habitats in South Africa. This bare root plant ships without a pot and is roughly 1.5" to 2.5" in diameter.
PLEASE NOTE: Euphorbia contain a white, latex sap that can cause skin irritation or allergic reaction. Use gloves and eye protection to handle.
Euphorbia will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 75% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
