Highlights
Euphorbia horrida var. nova: An African milk barrel with distinctive coloration. This columnar plant has sharp ridges lined with thorns. It can have stripes of white and green marking its stem. The growth habit of this species makes it resemble the unrelated barrel cacti. Over time, the ribs often become wavy.
PLEASE NOTE: Euphorbia contain a white, latex sap that can cause skin irritation or allergic reaction. Use gloves and eye protection to handle.
Euphorbia will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 75% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
