Highlights
Echinocereus viereckii ssp. morricalii (Taylor): A fun, clustering cactus of many clumping stems. It grows a solid, green stem up to 20.0" tall with 6-7 ribs. The stem is nearly spineless, with only a few, short bristles. As the stems grow longer and more densely-packed, they can start to bend and sprawl. They go partially dormant in winter, shrinking and wrinkling as they reduce their water content. Spring sun and regular water gets them to quickly plump back up. It blooms from the sides of the stems with short, funnelform flowers of vibrant magenta. This plant is fully rooted in a 3.5" pot.
This cactus variety will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
