Highlights
Giant Barrel Cactus (Echinocactus platyacanthus) (Link & Otto): The largest of the barrel cacti. This species changes in appearance completely over the course of its lifetime. It starts its life as a powdery blue orb, sometimes with purple striations. The juveniles have white wool on top of them and red spines. They grow slowly and can live for over a century in their native habitats in Mexico. They gradually turn green and can reach 4.0' wide and 8.0' tall. Mature plants have 60+ sharp ribs with dark spines. They produce few offsets but can sprout numerous shiny, yellow flowers.
This variety of cactus will not survive a frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
