Highlights
Dudleya brittonii (Johansen): A favorite species with a dramatic look. This chalky plant is bright white and reflects more UV rays than any other plant. It has narrow, pointed leaves and the rosette can grow up to 18.0" wide. They have a thick covering of powdery wax that reduces water loss in hot, sunny conditions. Additionally, dudleyas go dormant each summer. This species is native to Baja California, where it grows on exposed cliffs. Originally grown in a 3.5" pot. For protection in transit, this plant ships bare root, wrapped in paper.
Dudleya need bright sunlight to maintain their colors and form. They will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light.
Like most succulents, they need great drainage and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again. Dudleya are accustomed to winter rainfall and should be left dry during their summer dormancy. Keep water off the leaves to prevent rot and protect the powdery coating.
