Ripple Jade (Crassula arborescens ssp. undulatifolia) (Tölken): The waviest of the Jade Plants. Its waxy, blue-green leaves can flush fuchsia at the edges when stressed with full sun, drought, or cold temperatures. In the wild, it grows en masse on rocky slopes in South Africa, but it also works well as a landscaping shrub in frost-free climates and as a potted house plant everywhere else.
When given room to grow, Ripple Jade will form a dense, mounding shrub up to 3.0' tall. It responds well to pruning, however, which reveals its thick, succulent branches for a tree-like, bonsai appearance. Flowers are a rare sight on this Jade, but it can produce clusters of white, star-shaped blossoms in late winter.
Ripple Jade is very drought-tolerant, but it does need bright sunshine, great drainage, and protection from hard frosts. Be sure to plant in pots with drainage holes and water deeply only when the soil is completely dry. This plant is a natural subspecies, not a hybrid, and thus is a very strong, low-maintenance grower. It even propagates readily from cuttings.
Crassula can show tiny white or black dots on their leaves. These are healthy, water-transferring pores called "hydathodes" and not a sign of disease.

Ripple jade is a slow grower, so it'll likely be years before you need to prune it. However, to help it fit in smaller spaces, or to shape the plant, you certainly can prune it. To prune, use a clean pair of shears or a clean knife. Then, starting with the largest branches, start cutting, being sure not to cut too much of the plant off at one time. You can always make more cuts, but it will take a while for the plant to grow new branches, so it's better to err of the side of cutting too little. Cut until the plant is the shape/size you want and remember that cut branches will make more branches.

We want to first preface this by saying that bonsai is an art form. How you decide to shape or trim your bonsai is up to you and will be informed by how you want your plant to look.
First, plant the Jade Plant in a shallow pot, about 3"-4" deep, that has a drainage hole. We highly recommend using this Bonsai Jack Gritty Mix as soil. Aim to grow it in partial sun. Only water if the soil is completely dry and the leaves feel flexible. When you do water, deeply drench it until water runs out the pot's drainage hole. Potentially, support the main stem with a skewer.
After about a year in the shallow pot, it's time for the first trim. It's preferable to trim in the spring when your plant is actively growing. Be very aggressive with your pruning. What you're looking for with your first trim is, essentially, to turn your plant into a twig. You'll remove most of the foliage, just be careful not to remove it all. Unfortunately, no. This plant grows tall like a bush and would make a poor ground cover plant. It's also not cold hardy so any frost would kill it.

It certainly needs more sunlight than other jades, but not too much more. A south facing window would be plenty of light, depending on how much it's shaded. If the window gets 4 or 5 hours of sunlight a day, that's plenty.

Jade Plants like this are hardy to 30F (zone 10) and will not tolerate hard frosts. But they grow well indoors through winter!

That depends on lots of factors including growing conditions and the time of year. Rather than sticking to a schedule, only water when the soil is completely dry and the leaves start to feel less firm. When in doubt, don't water yet. When you do water, drench deeply so that water runs out the pot's drainage hole.

Succulents need grittier soil than other plants because they are adapted to dry conditions and store water in their leaves. Regular potting soil mixes stay damp for long periods of time, which can cause rot in succulents. Instead, use a sandy, well-draining soil so you can water thoroughly without leaving your succulent in standing water.

Our plants can be transplanted immediately upon arrival.
If you want to wait to transplant, they can remain in their original containers for up to a month. If the pots came in a plastic carrier tray, remove the pots from the carrier tray prior to the first watering.
Keep the plants indoors near a sunny window or outdoors under a roof (only if outdoor temperatures stay above your succulent's minimum hardiness temperature). Water only after the soil is fully dry by drenching from above with a faucet, hose, or watering can. Gently shake excess water from the leaves and allow containers to drain completely.
