Highlights
Large Red Carpet Stonecrop (Crassula pubescens ssp. radicans) (Tölken): Round, green foliage edged with red, similar to its relative the jade plant (Crassula ovata). Unlike jades, its leaves densely fill the upright stems and the whole plants stays under 6.0" tall while spreading laterally. Moderate stress from cool weather (around 50F), drought, and direct sun will bring out the brightest red pigments. This variety also thrives potted, indoors and its clusters of tiny white flowers contrast well with the foliage.
Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors. They need ample sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.
Crassula can show tiny white or black dots on their leaves. These are healthy, water-transferring pores called "hydathodes" and not a sign of disease.
This variety is easy to re-root from stem cuttings. Look to our Succulent Cuttings Guide for tips on succulent propagation.
