Highlights

Red Pagoda or Pagoda Village (Crassula capitella ssp. thyrsiflora) (Tölken): An eye-catching tower of stacked, triangular leaves. It is native to South Africa where its long stems sprawl and form mats on dry, rocky slopes. In cultivation, Pagoda Village can spill nicely from containers or be planted as a ground cover in frost-free climates.

C. capitella ssp. thyrsiflora has a glossy green base color, but flushes deep burgundy with moderate stress, such as full sun, extended drought, or cool temperatures. The stems grow to about 8.0" long and re-root easily where they bend down to the soil or from stem cuttings. This variety can bloom in summer or fall with lots of tiny, white flowers.

Red Pagoda needs plenty of sunlight to maintain its color and form. For indoor growing, place near a sunny window or under a grow light. Use containers with drainage holes and a gritty, well-draining soil that contains coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait to re-water until the soil is completely dry.

PLEASE NOTE: These leaves are very fragile and may fall off during shipping, but will grow back.

Does it still live after flowering See more »

It is monocarpic. However, only the branches that flower will die off. Any unflowering branches will continue to live and produce their own branches.

Yes. We plant these up with multiple stems per 2" pot. Most commonly, pots get 3-5 stems.

Hi! I have a couple of 2'' pots, but I can purchase a bigger one, if necessary. See more »

Hi there!

They'll come to you in 2 inch pots already, so I would recommend a bigger pot. However, you shouldn't need a pot that's much bigger.

A 2.5 or 3 inch pot should do nicely! I hope this helps!

The flowers are cute and the bloom stalks an adorable magenta pink, but they smell TERRIBLE. See more »

It sounds like you're caring for your pagoda village entirely too well, which is a hilarious problem to have. In all seriousness though, there is no way to make it stop as, once a branch has committed to flowering, it will do so.

If you're using grow lights, some wavelengths of light can encourage flowering. Fertilizers can also encourage flowering, especially if they're high in phosphorus.

Regardless, it sounds like you'll have to just wait out the blooming.

These plants definitely require a gentle touch. A great technique is to lay your hand, lightly, on top of the foliage and grab the bottom of the pot with your other hand. Then, invert the plant and give the pot a couple squeezes and a gentle shake. The plant should slide out of it's pot and into your palm. From this point forward, simply handle the plant by the root ball rather than the foliage.

I noticed my Crassula capitella was fine but I watered it and noticed it stretched the next day. See more »
2 years ago  •  Staff Answer
The most common cause of stretching is a lack of light and this plant does need a lot of light to keep its leaves close together as it grows more stem tissue. Make sure it's in an unobstructed south facing window or use a grow light. Click the link below to read our grow light recommendations.

When to water See more »

The plant will show you when it's thirsty. After the soil has completely dried, look for droopy stems and slight wrinkles in the leaves before watering deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole.

We want to first preface this by saying that bonsai is an art form. How you decide to shape or trim your bonsai is up to you and will be informed by how you want your plant to look.

First, plant the Jade Plant in a shallow pot, about 3"-4" deep, that has a drainage hole. We highly recommend using this Bonsai Jack Gritty Mix as soil. Aim to grow it in partial sun. Only water if the soil is completely dry and the leaves feel flexible. When you do water, deeply drench it until water runs out the pot's drainage hole. Potentially, support the main stem with a skewer.

After about a year in the shallow pot, it's time for the first trim. It's preferable to trim in the spring when your plant is actively growing. Be very aggressive with your pruning. What you're looking for with your first trim is, essentially, to turn your plant into a twig. You'll remove most of the foliage, just be careful not to remove it all. Wherever you prune, the plant will fill that spot with even more foliage. Use this to your advantage by heavily… See full answer »
