Do terracotta clay pots need to be washed in a vinegar and water bath. Then rinsed off thoroughly prior to soaking them for 24 hours and then letting them completely dry before using them on succulents. See more »
2 years ago  •  Staff Answer
No. They're ready to plant in right out of the box. However, terracotta pots can develop a white crust to them after having plants in them for a while. This is from water entering the tiny pores in the terracotta and then evaporating, leaving behind any minerals that were present in the water. Depending on how "hard" your water is, this effect could be mild or intense. It won't affect the health of your plants, but if you don't like the look of it, the cleaning method you describe will remove this crust from the outside of the pot.

A creative solution some people use to fill space at the bottom of extra large containers is sealed, plastic water bottles. They also help keep the container a bit lighter.

I am wondering if we can get the transplanted succulents delivered already in a ceramic pot. If so, what would be the additional cost? See more »
1 year ago  •  Staff Answer
Sorry, we only ship our succulents in their plastic grow pots because they tend to fare poorly in shipping if transplanted into heavier pots (they bang into each other more with the weight). But you'll find that they are very quick and easy to transplant yourself!

If these are for an event, we do recommend that you have them delivered 1-2 weeks before the event. We ship Mondays & Tuesdays and you can leave us a note in the Order Comments during checkout as to when you'd like them delivered.

Thank you very much! Below is a link to our Pots page. We're also always looking for pots with drainage holes, but the terracotta ones listed there do have them, if that's what you're looking for.

I am looking to purchase one of your beautiful succulents to replace a succulent I bought previously that unfortunately was over watered. Should I clean the terracotta pot that its in before potting the new succulent in it, and should I just use hot water and soap? Thank you!! See more »
3 years ago  •  Staff Answer
Yes! Hot water and soap should do fine, however, terracotta pots tend to get a white crust on them. This crust is built up salts from fertilizer or even tap water. It's easiest to get this off by first soaking the pots in a solution of 1:4 or 1:3 vinegar to water.

do the ceramic pots all have drainage holes? See more »

Actually, most of them do not have a drainage hole. In the product description for these pots, it will indicate whether they have a drainage hole or not.

We don't want to limit advanced growers who do want to grow in non-draining pots or use them as a decorative outer pot. We are actually switching over to only carrying draining terracotta pots, so the non-draining ones are limited. You can find terracotta pots with drainage holes here on our Pots for Succulents page.

Sorry, we do not repot, as succulents do not ship as well in the heavier pots and the pots are more likely to be damaged in transit if we can't fully wrap them in bubble wrap. But if you add any of these Succulent Pots to your order, you'll have an easy time transplanting!

Shop Succulent Soil Here

Succulents need grittier soil than other plants because they are adapted to dry conditions and store water in their leaves. Regular potting soil mixes stay damp for long periods of time, which can cause rot in succulents. Instead, use a sandy, well-draining soil so you can water thoroughly without leaving your succulent in standing water.
