Especially the cholla wood. Do you always put moss first? Or just attach barerooted? See more »

There are a lot of options, though we generally don't display air plants on absorptive materials like moss. A lot of the cholla wood has natural holes in it, so it's easy to nestle air plants in as-is. If you want a more permanent attachment, wire and fishing line are great. Some people hot glue them in place, but we prefer to use an adhesive called Tilly Tacker that's specifically made for Tillandsia.

Thanks for your question!

Yes. Air plants are monocarpic, which means that they flower only once in their lifetime. However, this is not necessarily the end of your air plant growing experience, for two reasons:

1) Air plants take a long time to die after they flowered. This differentiates them from Sempervivum which seem to dry up as their blooms do.

2) A flowering air plant will also produce three or so pups. These pups can be removed from the mother plant and used to grow new air plants. This process can be quickened by cutting the bloom stalk off of the mother plant after it begins to dry.

Yes, you should fertilize air plants because they get all their nutrients from their water. We carry an air plant-specific fertilizer at the link below, which you can mist on your plants once a week.

All of the air plants will have their sizes mentioned in inches (i.e. [2.0-3.0"] means the air plant is two to three inches across). It's worth noting that these sizes are from leaf tip to leaf tip so use a hole that's an inch or so lower than the given measurement.

You can, but doing so will increase the likelihood of rot due to soil borne bacteria and fungi. Just be sure to keep the soil dry at all times and water the plant away from the soil.

Hi, how often should I be immersing my air plants? I have seen videos where people immerse the whole plant in water and they say to leave it there for about a half hour. Should I be doing that weekly or less often? See more »

Hello! I am wondering what the word "enhanced" means in the description of the Tillandsia. Thank you. See more »
3 years ago  •  Staff Answer
Hi there!

The "enhanced" word is referring the the coloring. Each air plant that has that word in the title as been painted with that particular color. This one has been painted orange, for instance.

One thing to keep note of: this paint is not permanent and will wear off after a while.

If you're like me, and don't like the enhancing, we do sell air plants without it. Just look for listings on our website, under the air plants section, that don't have the word enhanced in the title. One of my personal favorites is Air Plant - Tillandsia tectorum 'Ecuador', but there are many more. I hope this helps.
