Highlights

Cereus repandus f. monstrosus 'Petra': A branching, columnar cactus with coppery red spines. This monstrose variety has bumpy, knobby stems, unlike the straight, ribbed form of the typical species and this particular cultivar is much more dense than its counterpart. It has spread widely, but its native range is likely the western Caribbean and Venezuela. It blooms with white and red flowers that develop into large, reddish fruits that resemble apples.

This cactus variety will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of temperatures below 40F, it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.

Good question!

Yes! This should work well with ponytail palm. Ponytail palm needs fast draining soil, like this cactus or succulent soil.

Is this sterile? See more »

While we cannot guarantee sterility, it is treated with a Bifenthrin drench and steamed at 200 degrees Fahrenheit so it's a pretty safe bet.

I have the above mentioned succulents (among others) and wondered if Bonsai Jacks would be fine on it's own with these or if I should add something to it. I do tend to want to overwater. See more »
3 years ago  •  Staff Answer
If you do tend to over water, straight Bonsai Jack soil should work well. It drains water so fast that some people have trouble keeping even many succulents plump. However, if you tend to overwater anyway, it won't give you any trouble.

The only genus of succulents Bonsai Jack might give you trouble with on your list is Peperomia. Many of them are not quite succulent enough to handle such a well draining soil. If you amended the soil by mixing equal parts Bonsai Jack and normal potting soil, that would be enough for Peperomia.

I think there is a difference between the two. See more »

There is a difference! Potting mix is sterile but doesn't contain soil while potting soil has more organic material. We recommend potting soil as potting mix is used primarily to increase the drainage which Bonsai Jack soil already has plenty of.

That depends on the succulent. With something like cactus or Lithops, straight Bonsai Jack is perfect. However, for something like Plectranthus or Kalanchoe, it would be a good idea to amend the Bonsai Jack with a little regular potting soil.

That depends on the plant. For things like Lithops, Pleiospilos, and many cacti, this soil alone is perfect. However, for things like Sedum, Echeveria and Crassula, mixing this Bonsai Jack soil with regular potting soil in a 1:1 ratio would work very well.

Yes! The mix is designed for really drought tolerant succulents like Aloe vera, other Aloes and cacti.

Is there a list of which succulents are safe to plant in straight Bonsai Jack mix or which should be in a mix of Bonsai Jack and soil? See more »
2 years ago
There's no official list of succulents that do well in straight Bonsai Jack gritty mix, but in general cacti, mesembs, and these drought tolerant plants do very well.

The only reason we recommend mixing Bonsai Jack with potting soil is because plants like many Sedum and Echeveria would require much more frequent watering if planted in straight Bonsai Jack soil.

You can! Bonsai Jack without any mixing works very well for Lithops.

You can, but not exclusively this soil. You definitely should mix this with regular potting soil in a 1:1 ratio for those two plants specifically.
