Highlights
Saguaro Cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) (Britton & Rose): The classic form and poster child for all cacti. It is a branching, columnar species and can reach 50.0' tall after centuries of growth. The green stems have 15-30 ribs and dense spines. As it grows, new branches emerge midway up the main stem and the plant takes on a candelabra shape. At maturity it produces white, waxy flowers that are so large that bats and doves are among their top pollinators. It is native to the Sonoran Desert where it provides nesting habitat for birds. This species is the only member of its genus and its Latin name is in reference to Andrew Carnegie.
This variety of cactus will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
