Highlights
Ponytail Palm or Elephant's Foot (Beaucarnea recurvata) (Lemaire): One of the best-loved caudiciforms, or plant with a swollen stem for water storage. Atop its bulbous stem is a pompom of long flexible leaves. In addition to its distinctive appearance, Ponytail Palm is easy to grow and can adapt to a range of light conditions from full outdoor sun to low indoor light.
In its native habitat in southeastern Mexico, it usually grows in the understory of tropical forest slopes. In the wild it can grow into a 15.0' tall tree, but it will stay miniature potted indoors. This slow-growing stalwart can live for hundreds of years and has earned the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need ample sunlight, good drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.
