Highlights
Eve's Pin or Eve's Needle (Austrocylindropuntia subulata) (Backeberg): Tall, tree-like branching cactus that reaches 13.0' tall in the wild. Its stems are covered with bumpy tubercles, with a spined areole at the top of each tubercle. The stems are topped with awl-shaped, green leaves which can grow up to 5.0" long on a mature plant. This species is native to the Andes and was cultivated in ancient Peru to make fences and needles. It blooms with red to orange flowers that develop into reddish fruit.
This cactus variety will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
