Highlights
Star Cactus Cactus (also known as Monk's Hood or Bishop's Cap) (Astrophytum ornatum) (Britton & Rose): A columnar cactus with deep ribs (usually 8) that spiral around the stem. This species is speckled with lots of tiny white dots and has long, golden spines lining each rib. In the wild they grow over 6.0" tall, but they will stay smaller in an indoor pot on a sunny sill. They produce few offsets but can bloom with pale, yellow flowers atop the stem. This plant is fully rooted in a 2.5" round, plastic pot.
This cactus variety will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
