Highlights

Sand Rose (Anacampseros rufescens) (Sweet): Spiraling rosettes of pointed leaves that are olive green on one side and wine red on the other. In the wild, it grows in small, rocky crevices in the shrublands of South Africa, eventually forming mats. The plants stay small in a pot but can send up a short bloom stalk, each with a single, large, bright pink flower. The wide, flattened flowers open each afternoon and close by nightfall.

The fine, white filaments that can grow from its center help it survive droughts by trapping water vapor from the air. Anacampseros tend to like a bit more water than most succulents, but you will know when they are thirsty because their leaves wrinkle slightly.

Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need ample sunlight, good drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.

This Hanging Urchin does not need to be planted, as the Air Plant that's in the urchin does not grow in soil. It can simply be hung in a sunny window and regularly watered. The video at the link below will give you lots more info on Air Plant Care.

It does not. This product is just the urchin shell and the air plant.

The urchin shell is 2" to 2 3/4" in diameter and does not grow, but the type of Tillandsia inside varies, so the size varies.

I've lost a lot of air plants to mold. I make sure they are dry before replacing them in their holders but they still die. Also, I want to put them in those shells and hang them but do I have to take them out each week when I soak them and then put them back? I really love the look but I am getting frustrated because they keep dying on me! See more »

Increasing the amount of light helps fight mold and may be just what your plants need. You could also try misting your plants thoroughly 3x a week instead of soaking them once a week. That would help them dry even faster. That second tip goes double if your house is naturally humid or you're using a swamp cooler.

I don't live near open water, where could I find the root containers to hang a few of these "air plants"? I'm not a guest but would like a fast result as my mother-in-law is coming & I think she'd enjoy these in her room. See more »

The urchin shell has a small hole in its top. This way, you can get creative with fishing line and paper clips, or any sort of decorative hook. Here's a tip; try using low gauge, clear fishing line. That'll be easier to hide.

You can, but doing so will increase the likelihood of rot due to soil borne bacteria and fungi. Just be sure to keep the soil dry at all times and water the plant away from the soil.

Thanks for your question!

Yes. Air plants are monocarpic, which means that they flower only once in their lifetime. However, this is not necessarily the end of your air plant growing experience, for two reasons:

1) Air plants take a long time to die after they flowered. This differentiates them from Sempervivum which seem to dry up as their blooms do.

2) A flowering air plant will also produce three or so pups. These pups can be removed from the mother plant and used to grow new air plants. This process can be quickened by cutting the bloom stalk off of the mother plant after it begins to dry.
