Highlights
Giant Jewel Plant (Aloinopsis malherbei) (Bolus): A miniature mesemb of flattened, spoon-shaped leaves lined with raised, white dots. They are adapted to dry, full-sun environments in South Africa. For the best results, plant in a rapidly draining soil and water lightly in the spring and fall growing seasons. Reduce watering frequency in the summer and leave completely dry in the winter. With sufficient light they can show shades of blue, brown, or gray--whatever helps them blend in with the rocks in their native habitat. They bloom in early spring with pale yellow flowers that smell like honey. The flowers open each afternoon and close by nightfall. This plant is fully rooted in a 3.5" pot.
Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need bright sunlight, good drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.
