Highlights
Agave utahensis ssp. utahensis - Utah Agave: This subspecies has dark green to bluish-green leaves rimmed in white marginal teeth, tipped in reddish spines. Among the smaller growing Agaves, utahensis typically grow one foot tall and one foot wide. However, its flower stalk is quite tall and can reach as high as 15 feet. As A. utahensis come from high elevations in southwestern United States, it can tolerate colder temperatures.
Warning: very pokey. Avoid planting in walkways!
Agave need plenty of full, outdoor sunlight and great drainage to thrive. They do well in gritty, mineral soils and pots with drainage holes. Over time you'll see new offsets or "pups" sprout up around the base of the mother plant.
Agave grow slowly in the spring and summer and can tolerate high heat and extended drought. This variety is frost hardy and will happily thrive through winter under an insulating blanket of snow. Protect from heavy rains and standing water to prevent rot.
