Highlights
Agave striata ssp. striata (Espadin): A. striata puts out long, slender, spiked leaves, but without pesky marginal spines. Its leaves are blueish-green, and yellowish around the leaf-tip's sharp point. It produces offshoots when mature, and creates a colony of quill-tipped spherical plants. In groups, their leaves are oriented in different directions; this creates an illusion of flowing movement. Being deer resistant, drought resistant, and self-propagating, they create a convenient border around gardens and can protect other plants from critters.
Agave need plenty of full, outdoor sunlight and great drainage to thrive. They do well in gritty, mineral soils and pots with drainage holes. Over time you'll see new offsets or "pups" sprout up around the base of the mother plant.
Agave grow slowly in the spring and summer and can tolerate high heat and extended drought. This variety is frost hardy and will happily thrive through winter under an insulating blanket of snow. Protect from heavy rains and standing water to prevent rot.
