Highlights
Mountain Agave (Agave montana) (Villarreal): A gorgeous species with a fierce look. This sturdy rosette grows broad leaves lined with such formidable teeth that they look like daggers. It is native to the mountains of northeastern Mexico where mature plants can reach 4.0' tall and 5.0' wide. It makes a great addition to the garden because it can flush red in direct sun and does not produce offsets or pups. It can tolerate colder temperatures than most Agave, all the way down to 5F. This rooted plug ships without a container.
Agave need plenty of full, outdoor sunlight and great drainage to thrive. They do well in gritty, mineral soils and pots with drainage holes. Over time you'll see new offsets or "pups" sprout up around the base of the mother plant.
Agave grow slowly in the spring and summer and can tolerate high heat and extended drought. This variety is frost hardy and will happily thrive through winter under an insulating blanket of snow. Protect from heavy rains and standing water to prevent rot.
