Highlights
Agave harvardiana is a rugged and visually striking succulent native to the Chihuahuan Desert region of West Texas and northern Mexico. This medium-sized agave forms tight, symmetrical rosettes of broad, blue-green to silvery-gray leaves, each tipped with a sharp terminal spine and lined with fine teeth, offering bold texture and desert appeal. Renowned for its exceptional cold and drought tolerance, Agave harvardiana thrives in arid landscapes and rocky soils, making it ideal for xeriscaping, desert gardens, and container displays. It grows slowly and remains compact, typically reaching 2–3 feet in height and width. Once mature, it may send up an impressive flowering stalk bearing yellow blooms, attracting pollinators before completing its life cycle. Tough yet elegant, this agave is a superb low-maintenance choice for water-wise gardeners. This plant is fully rooted in a 1.5" plug.
Agave need plenty of full, outdoor sunlight and great drainage to thrive. They do well in gritty, mineral soils and pots with drainage holes. Over time you'll see new offsets or "pups" sprout up around the base of the mother plant.
Agave grow slowly in the spring and summer and can tolerate high heat and extended drought. This variety is only somewhat frost hardy and needs protection from heavy rains and standing water to prevent rot.
