Stapelia paniculata ssp. scitula: Rare oddity from South Africa with unbelievable flowers. Most of the time, this subspecies looks like an unassuming set of short, green stems, but it can produce lots of astounding blooms that looks more like leathery, maroon starfish than flowers. Stapelia flowers are pollinated by flies, so they have evolved to look (and sometimes smell) like rotting meat. S. paniculata scitula doesn't have the foul odor of some stapeliads, but its flowers are fleshy, textured, and fringed with long hairs. The stems can take on a purple tinge when grown in bright sunlight.
Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need bright sunlight, good drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again. Reduce watering during winter dormancy.
