Highlights
Pilosocereus gounellei (Byles & Rowley): A branching, columnar cactus from Brazil with long white to translucent spines. It tends to have a main stem with new branches arching off like a candelabra, reaching up to 13.0' tall in the wild. Its coloration can range from olive green to frosty silver. It usually blooms in the spring or fall with white, funnel-shaped flowers 1.5" to 3.5" long, which develop into fruits that resemble pumpkins. This robust cactus can grow faster than other species and makes a great potted variety in sunny locations.
This cactus variety will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of temperatures below 40F, it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 70% to 80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again.
