Pachyphytum fittkaui (sometimes written as P. fittkau) (Moran): A large rosette species with blue-green, finger-like leaves that stand upright on a thick stem. Grow this species in bright sun to get a pink to purple blush on the leaves. In the wild, its stems can grow over 1.0' long, sprawling among rocks or hanging from cliffsides in Central Mexico. In cultivation, it is easily kept compact through regular pruning and "beheading" (more info). This plant is coated with a natural, powdery wax that gives it a frosty look and helps it tolerate full sun and drought.
Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. They need ample sunlight, good drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.
